중력이 있는 공간에 던져진 물체와 같다. 행위의 결과로 생겨나며 필연적으로 죽음을 맞이하기 때문이다. 태어남과 죽음 사이에 있는 삶에는 우연과 필연이 마치 씨줄과 날줄처럼 교차한다. 이것을 예측할 수 있을까. 유전자의 조합과 생에서 벌어질 수 있는 모든 변수를 알고 있고, 계산할 수 있다면 가능할 것이다. 혹은 어떠한 일이 발생하기 전의 초기 조건을 이해하면, 즉, 모든 변수를 파악한 후 태어나기 이전 상태로 돌려 계산하면 이론적으로 가능할 것이다. 그러나 이 두 가지 모두 현실적으로 불가능하다. 다시 말해 생은 사랑의 결과로써 생겨나기에 필연적이고, 태어난 이상 반드시 죽음을 맞이하는 운명에 있지만 그 과정은 무작위(Random)이다.<br>\n인간의 역사와 문명은 생이 지니는, 혹은 인류의 생이 속해있는 환경의 무작위성을 여러 가지 관점으로 이해해보려고 노력해 온 결과물과 다름 아니다. 때문에 과학을 비롯한 학문이 진보함에 따라 이전에는 우연이었던 많은 것들은 확률로, 기적이었던 것은 자연현상으로, 관찰할 수 없었던 것들은 사진적으로 관찰할 수 있는 것이 되었다. 이전에는 우연이기 때문에, 예측할 수 없기에 인류가 느꼈던 두려움 혹은 숭배의 감정은 문명의 발전으로 인해 희석되었다. 때문에 배우는 것은 기쁨이며 학문은 두려움을 없애준다고 믿고 있었다. 그러나 이 생각은 외조부님의 죽음을 목도하며 바뀌었다.<br>\n<br>\n외조부님은 어린 시절에는 난해한, 그래서 무서운 어른이셨다. 어른이 되어 깨달은 사실은 그 난해함의 이유는 학도병으로써 겪으셨던 한국 전쟁의 트라우마에서 기인한 것임을 깨달았다. 외조부님은 공부하셨으나 이를 평생 극복하지 못한 학자셨다. 신념을 가지고, 항상 공부하고 학문을 평생 멈추지 않았다고 해서 죽음 앞에서 덜 두려운 것은 아니라는 사실은 내게 상실감보다 큰 충격이었다. 해로하던 외조부님을 잃으시고 혼자 남으셔서 급격히 말수가 적어지신 외할머니를 바라본다. 외할머니는 한국 전쟁 중 할아버지와 결혼하셔서 배움을 중단하시고 평생 가족들을 내조하셨다. 그렇다고 늙는다는 것, 죽음을 앞에 두고 있다는 것이 더 두려운 것도, 덜 두려운 것도 아니었다. 정말 안다는 것은, 지식을 쌓는다는 것은 생을 이해하고 긍정하게 되는 것일까.<br>\n<br>\nOne Life는 작가의 가족이 ‘대상을 허공에 던지고 줍는 행동을 반복하는’ 퍼포먼스를 통해 의도적인 무작위성을 연출하고 이를 촬영한 연작이다. 이후 편집 과정에서 떨어지기 위해 던져진 물체가 아닌 떨어져야 하는 운명과 중력을 거스른 채 멈추어 있으며, 동시에 구도적인 조화를 이루는 프레임 만을 선택해 프린트하는 과정을 통해 문맥이 사라진 순간의 초월성을 드러내고자 했다. 생을 상징하는 ‘중력이 있는 공간에 던져진 물체’로는 일관되게 사과를 사용했는데, 종교와 권력의 주체가 바뀌는 역사 속에서 가장 오랜 시간 살아남은 지식과 운명의 상징이기 때문이며. 익숙한 동시에 심원한 상징이기 때문이다.<br>\n<br>\n사과에는 수많은 상징이 있다. 선악과로 묘사된 사과. 게르만 신화에 등장하는 신들의 힘을 지탱하는 사과. 트로이 전쟁을 낳은 황금 사과, 모자에 절을 하는 것을 거부한 윌리엄 텔이 아들의 머리 위에 놓고 활시위를 당기게 한 민주주의를 상징하는 사과. 중력을 발견한 뉴턴의 사과. 동화 속 백설공주의 사과. 독일의 암호 코드를 해석해 세계대전의 종식을 앞당기고 컴퓨터의 초석을 세웠으나 당시 동성애를 금지하고 있던 영국 정부로부터 호르몬 처방을 받게 되어 남성성을 읽게 되자 사과에 청산가리를 주사한 후 백설공주의 동화를 떠올리며 ‘가장 순수한 여자가 생을 마무리하듯’ 한입 깨물고 죽어 지금 애플의 마크가 된 엘런 튜링의 사과. 이를 알고 있는 사람에게는 심원하고, 설령 이 상징들을 모르더라도 친근한 오브제이다.<br>\n<br>\n삶에 있는 수많은 상징들을 아는 사람도 있고, 공부하는 사람도 있고, 별 상관없는 사람도 있고, 이해하고 싶으나 그렇지 못한 사람들이 한 시대 속에 여러 가지 언어를 사용하며 뒤섞여 살아간다. 생은 죽음으로 가는 과정의 무작위성으로 가득 찬 과정이다. 사진은 그 과정에서 우연과 필연이 교차해 만들어내는 무언가를 기념한다. 서있다고 생각되는 순간이 있었다. 어느 날 문득 그런 생각이 들었다. “유년은 사라져 돌이킬 수 없고, 미래는 보이지 않는구나.”라고 어느 여름날 난간에 걸터앉아 생각했다. 그 순간 내 ‘앞에’ 펼쳐져 있다고 생각했던 화려한 풍경들은 환상이 되었다. 내가 앉은 32층 아파트 옥상의 아래를 내려다본다. 아찔한 간극과 저 멀리 바닥이 보였다. 어떤 사람들이 보았던 생의 마지막 풍경과도 비슷할 것이라는 생각이 들었다. 돌아갈 수 없는 과거와 먼 미래 사이의 현재. 한 발짝 내딛으면 죽음, 그리고 그 경계에 앉은 삶. 나는 그렇게 살아있었다. 아주 짧은 순간, 허공을 본 것 같았다. 현재란 돌이킬 수 없는 과거와 가닿을 수 없는 미래 사이 아주 짧은 허공이었다. 방으로 뛰어내려와 카메라를 가져왔고, 다시 그곳에 앉아 내가 디디고 있는 허공과 내 발을 찍었다. 그 순간이 시작이었다.<br>\n<br>\nSelf-Portrait은 현실과 환상의 경계에 선, 사진으로 환원되기 위한 관객 부재의, 사진으로만 환원될 수 있는 퍼포먼스다. Self-Portrait 시리즈는 눈앞에 ‘펼쳐진’ 풍경은 일종의 환상이라는 발상에서 출발한다. 나는 도시의 고층 건물이나 절벽의 경계에 놓인 스스로의 모습을 사진에 담는다. 연사 모드의 셀프타이머를 설치한 채 초당 수 장의 사진을 찍으며 메모리카드가 다 찰 때까지 경계에서 균형을 잡고자 움직이는 내 몸을 담고, 그 후 의식처럼 내가 머물렀던 발아래를 찍는다. 고층 건물이나 전망대에서 사람들은 도시의 풍경이 자신의 눈앞에 펼쳐져 있다고 생각한다. 하지만 그 경계에 다가서서 아래를 내려다보면 사람들은 아찔함, 혹은 고소공포증을 느낀다. 바로 이 아찔함이 시각적 인지가 공간적 인지 속으로 붕괴하는 순간이다. 때문에 내 사진 속의 경계는 두 가지의 인지적 방식이 충돌하는 경계이자 환상과 현실 사이를 상징하는 심리적 경계이기도 하다. 그 어떠한 간극에 서있건, 경계에 위치한 인간의 몸과 정신은 한없이 유약하다. 정신은 그 경계 너머로 날고자 하나 두려운 몸은 현실을 붙잡는다. 이것이 현실 속의 문맥이다. 그리고 연사 모드의 사진들은 이러한 콘텍스트를 오롯이 담는다. 때문에 썸네일로 본 문맥은 경계에서 균형을 잡으려는 나의 느리고 미약한 움직임이다. 내 모습을 지켜보는 타인이 인지하는 나의 모습도 이와 크게 다르지 않다. 하지만 이상하게도 그중 단 한장은 문맥과 전혀 다른 말을 하고 있다. 내가 상상하는, 그 경계의 위험 속에서도 불구하고 환경에 녹아든 평온함, 혹은 눈앞의 경계 너머로 몸을 던질듯한, 나 자신도 인지하지 못한 나의 모습을 수많은 사진 중 단 한장은 말하고 있다. 이렇게 스스로도 인지하지 못하는 생의 아주 짧은 한순간만은 현실이 아닌 환상, 그리고 꿈꾸는 것, 욕망하는 것이 현실로 드러날 수 있다고. 그리고 사진은 그것을 마치 전부인 듯 담아 환상을 현실로 가져올 수 있다고 믿는다. 때문에 나에게 사진은 진실이자 거짓이며, 현실이자 환상이다.\n"}, :artist=>{:title=>"안준, Ahn Jun", :description=>"[Education]<br>\n2017 Hongik University, phD in Photography<br>\n2012 Parsons-The New School for Design. 우리는 모두 우주의 한 조각을 몸속에 품고 있다.’ –칼 세이건.<br>\n<br>\n생명의 기원은 우주에서 날아온 포자일지도 모른다는, 그리고 지구와 우주를 구별하는 것이 무의미하게 우리와 먼 우주는 같은 것으로 이루어져 있다는 칼 세이건의 ‘코스모스’를 읽던 날을 나는 아직 기억하고 있다. 세상이 나를 중심으로 펼쳐져 있는 것이 아닌 내가 우주 속의 티끌 같은 존재가 되어 거대한 공간에 던져져 붕 떠있는 기분. ‘죽어서 땅속에 묻혀 흙이 된다.’는 것은 영원히 헤어져 다시 만날 수 없는 것이 아닌 그저 원래 있었던 것으로 돌아가는 것이니 결국 진정한 의미의 이별은 어디에도 없는 게 아닐까.라는 생각을 하며 읽던 책을 그대로 가슴에 펼쳐놓은 채 전기장판에 오래도록 누워있다 잠이 든 어느 겨울날의 오후는 아직도 선명하고도 기묘한 기억으로 남아있다. 그때는 이해하기 힘든 말들로 가득했던 두꺼운 책 속의 한 부분이 당시 어린 마음에 가지고 있던 죽음에 대한 공포를 차분히 가라앉혀 주었다.<br>\n그 당시의 하루하루는 아이에게는 참 길게 느껴져서 인생 역시 매우 긴 것 같았었지만 지금 생각해 보면 매우 짧은 유년인 것 같은 것을 보면 시간의 길이는 상대적이다. 하나의 생과 그 시간은 살아내기에는 길고, 기억하기에는 매우 짧은 것처럼, 유구한 인류의 역사 역시 지구의 관점에서 보면 찰나와 같이 짧은 시간일 것이며 그 지구 역시 광대한 우주 속에서 태어났으며 가늠하기 힘든 시간 후 죽음을 맞이할 것이다. 그리고 그 시간 속에는 수많은 우연과 필연이 교차하며 이들은 잠시 만났다 사라져 간다.<br>\n여수의 바닷가 매립지의 공사현장, 컨베이어 벨트에서 쉼 없이 빠르게 떨어져 내리는 돌들은 마치 시끄러운 소리를 내는 검은 커튼 같았다. 어떤 모습으로 떨어져 내리는지 궁금해 그 모습을 빠른 셔터스피드로 촬영해 보니 그 현상은 8천 분의 1초가 되어서야 그 움직임을 멈추었다. ‘떨어진다’는 현상이 마치 ‘붕 떠있는’것처럼 역전된 그곳에는 내가 어린 시절 칼 세이건을 읽으며 느꼈던 우주가 펼쳐있었다. 내가 카메라로 잡아서 끌어내 주지 않으면 보이지 않기에 없는 것인 그 장면은 저 먼 우주 어딘가에서 바라본 우리의 생과 같았다. 이후 고속 연사 방식으로 매년 수만 장의 떨어지는 돌을 촬영 후 떨어지는 현상의 우연과 촬영이라는 의도적인 행위가 지니는 필연이 교차하는 순간에 드러나는 인지 범위 밖의 숨겨진 아름다움을 드러낼 수 있는 프레임을 매해 대략 10장에서 15장씩 찾아 프린트하는 과정을 거쳐 매년 Float프로젝트를 진행해 오고 있다.<br>\n<br>\n모든 순간, 모든 현상들을 ‘있음’과 ‘없음’ 사이를 끊임없이 진동한다. 그 진동 사이의 아주 짧은 허공과 정적. 떨어져 내리는 운명과 시간을 초월한, 카메라의 눈으로만 볼 수만이 있는 흔들림 없는 현상의 모습. 어떠한 생과 현상의 현재는 문맥에서 벗어났을 때 이렇게 초월적이다. 우리를 이루고 있는 것, 우리의 주변을 이루고 있는 것이 신비한 우주와 다름 아니며 무수히 많은 꿈과 같은 순간의 시간들이 모여 우리의 생을 이룬다. 그리고 우리의 생은 이렇게 우주의 시간과 공간 어딘가를 부유하고 있는 것이다.\n"}, :artist=>{:title=>"안준, Ahn Jun",
